Phase II of the Carolina Outreach Project is depicted above. Carolina Outreach provides mental health services to children with mental disorders and their families. It is at the old movie theatre site, just north of South Square, on Durham Chapel Hill Blvd. This project was an existing facility that has been in use while we are completing it. Last month we completed Phase I, which included excavating the rear parking lot, reconfiguring it, installing stone and the asphalt binder course. We ran into many undercuts in Phase I and decided, instead of repeating the same in Phase II, that we would complete that phase by utilizing the full depth reclamation process. Our truck mounted cement spreader is shown (above left) placing Portland cement on the ground while our Wirtgen Reclaimer is shown (above right) mixing the portland cement with the pulverized subbase. As you can tell from the mixing picture, John Benedict, our director of grading operations, is very excited about this process. We will pave the binder for this area in one day and both parking lots will be back in service the following morning. There are several other small site related items left such as sidewalks, retaining wall, trench drain, landscaping that will be completed in the next month. Once that is finished, we will be back for Phase III, which entails placing the final course of asphalt. We will complete that phase on a Saturday so as not to disturb their operations again.
