When you are involved in a construction project, you may need things done that aren't necessarily paving exactly. At Ruston Paving, we do more than paving by providing services that can be added to a paving project or provided separately, like grading and repair. Here are a few paving construction services that can accompany actual paving.
Paving Design and Planning
Proper and thorough design and planning are critical to the success of a paving project. Regardless of the type of space–commercial or industrial–the appropriate approach ensures a durable and long-lasting surface. Design and planning should be a comprehensive process that includes initial site evaluation and long-term maintenance planning. Beginning with a thorough evaluation of the site, factoring in soil composition, drainage patterns, and topography allows the right approach for preparing the sub-base and managing water runoff. Other considerations included in a well-designed plan are traffic load, climate, and business-specific needs.
Grading
When working on a project that requires a smooth and even base for new asphalt pavement, grading is a critical step. By leveling the material in the foundation, grading ensures that the proper elevations are set before asphalt paving occurs. If grading is done incorrectly, improperly, or not at all, the finished paving will result in bumps, ponding, and even flooding.
Jobsite Drying
Job site drying isĀ an important process on a wet construction site. When the soil has become saturated from water, it is unstable and can cause a project to be delayed. We can provide drying for the job site by adding a drying agent, such as lime or Portland cement, to the wet soil. A drying agent helps reduce moisture content, improve soil compaction, and create a stable base for construction activities.
Soil Stabilization
If the soil isn’t stable, your pavement structure won’t be. Stabilization is the permanent physical and chemical alteration of soils and aggregates to enhance their engineering properties. This process is used in construction and civil engineering to improve the load-bearing capacity of a sub-grade or sub-base to support pavements and foundations, soil stabilization fortifies the ground. This ensures that roads, buildings, and other structures remain durable and safe over time.
Pavement Repair
Repairing damaged paved areas can require multi-faceted approaches to be carefully executed by experienced workers. Ensuring smooth operations and a secure environment by using crew members who have been properly trained is critical to the success of a repair project. For example, some situations where repairs are needed can be sensitive to sliding or caving if not done correctly.
Techniques for repairing pavement include milling with precision to maintain the integrity of surrounding structures, such as a retail shopping center or office building, and minimize disruption. Some repair work may require smoothing out uneven surfaces by shim and overlay techniques. Applying chip seal and overlay is often needed to improve the durability and longevity of roads. Other projects require more extensive work where the existing pavement and subbase are pulverized to restore the foundation and create a stable driving surface.
Here are some of the services a paving company like ours can provide when performing repair work.
Sealcoating
Sealcoating restores the pavement surface of driveways, parking lots, and roads and reduces the wear and tear that is caused by seasonal temperature changes, weather, and other factors. Sealcoating requires applying a protective sealant to asphalt. The sealant is made of an asphalt cement mixed with inert fillers, water, emulsifying agents, and additives.
Asphalt Milling
Asphalt milling, also called cold milling or cold planing, is the process of removing the top layer of existing asphalt before resurfacing. By doing so, the pavement surface is restored to a uniform texture that can then be repaved. Asphalt milling eliminates the need to demolish and reconstruct the entire structure. Specially designed milling equipment is used to work at different depths, from removing enough to make the surface level and smooth out any irregularities to a full-depth removal.
Crack Sealing
Crack sealing places an adhesive sealant into cracks on the pavement surface to prevent the infiltration of moisture and non-compressible materials into the pavement. The process is cost-effective and can significantly slow the pavement’s deterioration to extend the pavement life by three to five years.
Full-Depth Reclamation
As defined by the Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association, “Full-depth reclamation is a technique by which a full pavement section and a predetermined portion of the underlying materials are crushed, pulverized, or blended to create a stabilized base.” This process is a proven technique to reconstruct worn-out pavements. Full-depth reclamation is a cost-effective, eco-conscious, and efficient method to recycle asphalt pavement. It can be used on private roads, subdivisions, parking lots, and industrial facilities.
