In 2011, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) used several innovative recycling methods to rehabilitate a 4 mile stretch of Interstate 81. One of the techniques involved pulverizing the existing material in place and mixing it with Portland cement to establish a stabilized base on which an asphalt surface course could then be applied. This process has been used by Ruston Paving for many years and is becoming more popular given the cost and time savings associated with the procedure.
