A sinkhole opened during heavy rains in the parking lot of the Big Kmart at Parkway Plaza on University Drive in Durham late Friday afternoon. After heavy storms dropped almost 2 inches of rain on Durham in a little over an hour, the parking lot flooded and caused a 20' wide by 20' long by 16' deep sinkhole to open up in the middle of the parking lot. Durham firefighters and rescue workers, as well as Ruston Paving, were called to the site to secure the area and reopen the collapsed 8' diameter pipe that was under the parking lot. This allowed the water to subside and drain from the parking lot without causing further underground damage and increasing the size of the sinkhole. You can read more from the Durham Herald Sun here.
